Inside Hudson, New York’s All-Straw House
You remember the story of the Three Little Pigs, right? The Big Bad Wolf shows up looking for them, so they build houses of straw, sticks, and finally, bricks to keep him out.
The story shows that the straw and stick houses were no match against the wolf, but what if I told you the straw house could be the strongest of them all? Well, that's being tested in Upstate New York...

The Straw House
In 2026, LTL Architects, alongside Guy Nordenson and Associates and Princeton University’s Sustainability of Our Planet fund completed their latest project: "All Straw House", and it's exactly what it sounds like.
The structure uses highly compacted straw for everything from insulation to structural support. according top the team behind the project, each straw board has an approximate density of 370 kilograms per cubic meter, which makes it three times stronger than a standard hay bale. The material is also pest and fire resistant (no comments were made about wolf resistance).
Assembly and More
The house was first put into construction in Princeton's architecture lab. It took two months to fabricate the components which were then transported to Hudson, New York for assembly.
The main section is composed of 33 prefabricated, overlapping thatch panels which are then smoothed out to create one continuous surface, before being covered in Tens of thousands of linear reeds.
The goal of this project is to show the viability of regenerative, biogenic architecture, with the hope that housing developers can learn a lesson and lead us into a greener (or yellower) tomorrow.
