Free Fishing Day in New York: A Chance for Families to Cast a Line Together
Mark your calendars for Saturday, September 27th, the next Free Fishing Day in New York State. This one is extra special because it also falls on National Hunting and Fishing Day, a celebration of outdoor recreation and conservation that began in 1972.
On Free Fishing Days, anyone can fish without a license. It is the perfect chance for kids and families to try something new or for experienced anglers to share their favorite hobby with friends. Keep in mind that while licenses are not required that day, all other fishing rules still apply.
Do you not have your own rod? Many libraries across the state partner with the DEC to lend fishing rods the same way you would borrow a book. It is an easy and affordable way to get started without buying gear right away.
For beginners, the DEC offers the I FISH NY Beginner’s Guide to Freshwater Fishing. It explains how to set up a rod, identify your catch, and follow fishing regulations. If you are ready to plan an outing, visit the DEC’s Places to Fish webpage or try the HuntFishNY app. The app has maps, stocking information, and even works when cell service is unavailable.
If you miss this one, the final Free Fishing Day of the year is on Veterans Day, November 11th. For all other days, New Yorkers and visitors 16 and older need a valid fishing license, which lasts for a full year from purchase.
