Wild Scene in Menands: Vehicle Splashes Into Pond, Driver Pulled to Safety
Car Plunges Into Apartment Pond
A wild and unexpected scene unfolded Tuesday afternoon in Menands when a vehicle drove straight into a pond at The Lofts apartment complex—and part of it was caught on video.
According to News 10 ABC, first responders were called to the scene after reports of a car submerged in the front pond with a person still inside.
Driver Rescued, Brought Back to Shore
When crews from the Menands Fire Department, West Albany Fire, and Colonie EMS arrived, they found the vehicle partially underwater. Thinking quickly, firefighters secured a rowboat and made their way out to the car, where they rescued the driver, the source states.

The driver was brought safely back to shore, evaluated by EMS, and then transported to the hospital.
Local Man Captures Video
Adding to the intensity of the moment, local resident Scott Kirwan says he witnessed the entire incident from home. He told us he watched the vehicle cross the intersection, barrel through a fence, and splash into the pond—and he captured it on video, which we’re sharing below.
There’s no word yet on their condition or what caused the crash, but Kirwan speculated that it may have been due to brake failure while cruise control was engaged.
"It would fight the brake to keep (going) 30 mph, and that would explain why there were no brake lights, and it seemed to accelerate when in the intersection," Kirwan theorized.
For those who saw it happen, it’s a moment that’s hard to believe—and even harder to unsee.
