Bedbug Infestation Found In Schenectady County-Owned Building

"Sleep tight, don't let the bedbugs bite". You've probably heard that phrase a ton, though you may not have really considered it an actual warning.

Growing up, I thought bedbugs were some mythical creature parents created to ensure they got a good nights sleep, but unfortunately for us, they're very real, and very much a problem.

What are Bed Bugs?

Just in case you weren't aware, yes, these little critters are real and you do not want to encounter them. They are very small insects that feed on blood. Though they choose from a variety of animals for their meals, humans seem to be the primary target.

They earned their name by making their home in mattresses and bedsprings, and feasting on human blood while we sleep. Luckily, they don't spread disease, but their bites can be nasty, leading to rashes, itching, and other unpleasant symptoms.

Infestation in Schenectady

Now, these pesky critters have infested a county-owned building in Schenectady. The Schaffer Heights building, which the county leases out for office spaces, was found to be full of them, and two rounds of treatment have been completed as of January 12th.

The county is not sure where the infestation originated, as the building houses both offices and residential housing. As of the moment, it seems they did not originate from the leased office spaces. For the moment, county staff working in the building have been temporarily relocated. Hopefully, the issue will be resolved soon and all parties can return to their homes and offices.
