Along With Warmer Weather Comes The Driveway Paving Scams
For a while, it seemed like there was another phone scam almost every week. Lately, I haven’t heard much about any phone scams, but here’s a scam that seems to happen once we get warm weather and all through the summer months. This scam is about someone that goes to your home, knocks on your door and offers a fantastic deal to pave your driveway.
This time, it’s happened to some people in Bennington. Someone will go to the person’s house, tell the person that they have some extra blacktop left over from a job that they just finished. They will also say that they will give the person a great deal to pave their driveway.
According to the story from WNYT, Bennington police told reporters that “at least one company is trying this scam to siphon money from unsuspecting customers.” The scammers will then raise the price, and give various excuses why they are raising it. The Bennington police want to know if these scammers may have approached anyone. You can call them at 802-442-1030.
I have had a similar personal experience at my home in Colonie several years ago. These driveway pavers knocked on my door and said almost the exact same thing about having leftover blacktop. I kept asking them if they had a business card. He told me that he had some in his truck and would leave it in my mailbox.
He never did, and I never saw him or his co-workers again. Another thing about my story is I didn’t even see their truck, or any vehicle. When I asked him where it was, he told me it was at another house about a block away from mine. Needless to say, I didn’t hire them to pave the driveway.
