Before I got to Upstate New York, I lived in Florida, Georgia, and Arizona, all famously hot states. So, when I experienced my first winter up here, I thought that my days in the sun were behind me.

Luckily, that's not exactly the case. Albany is currently experiencing a heatwave, and the city is prepared for it.

Spray Pads

Across the city of Albany you can find "Spray Pads", small sections of concrete that periodically spray water upwards, like a geyser. These are meant to provide small moments of relief from the heat, where you can simply walk over them, and get a splash of cold water.

Typically, these open closer to the start of summer, but after a weekend in the 90s, Albany is prepared to open them early. City Mayor Dorcey Applyrs announced that, starting on Memorial Day, May 25th, Spray Pads across the city will be open.

You can find them at Upper Lincoln Park, Ridgefield Park, Louonello Park, Rosemont Park, Sheridan Park, Hackett Park, Black Lives Matter Park and Clinton Market.

Tips and Tricks for Staying Cool

As someone who lived in both the tropics and the desert, I have plenty of ways to stay cool during the summer months. Spend more time in air conditioned establishments, hydrate as often as you can, and don't over exert yourself when working or playing outside. Know your limits!!

Public Libraries across the city of Albany will also be open as cooling centers across the city during their regular business hours.
