A Staple Since 1913, All Capital Region Freihofer's are Closed

According to reports, the last of the four remaining Freihofer Bakeries in the Capital Region have been permanently closed, a sad ending to a once-proud franchise with roots deeply cemented in the area.

140 years ago, Charles Freihofer, the son of German immigrants, opened a bakery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Using only the finest ingredients to make bread and other baked goods for families in the neighborhood, it didn't take long for his business to boom.

Freihofer's Comes to the Capital Region

Nearly 30 years after opening their Philadelphia location, in 1913 Charles and his brothers built a commercial baking plant in Lansingburgh, New York aptly named the Freihofer Bakery.

The Lansingburgh bakery featured a seventy-foot-long traveling bread oven, and the baker brothers were able to meet the demands of their customers. From their Lansingburgh location, Freihofer’s delivered bread, cakes, and cookies to a growing customer base, first by horse-drawn wagons and then by motorized trucks.

Freihofer baked goods, such as their famous chocolate chips and soft fresh breads were such a hit, that in the 1950s and 1960s, there was an actual "Freddie Freihofer Show" that aired locally on WRGB.

Four No More

But sadly, this once-proud franchise is now in peril, and according to reports, the last of the Capital Region Freihofer’s Bakery Outlets have closed the doors in Albany, Schenectady, Queensbury, and the Nelliston bakery in Montgomery County.

In all, more than half a dozen locations have been shut down across New York State.

The center of the show wasn't just the amazing custom motorcycles built for celebrities and others, it was the volatile relationship between Sr. and Jr. The show ran for 12 seasons before the two could no longer get along. It ended up in lawsuits and the two not talking for ten-plus years. In the past few years, the business moved to Florida. This left the 61,000-square-foot headquarters for sale and abandoned.
