Leak Sends Sewage Into Mohawk: Well, This is Crappy

A little leak may be a "eh, it happens" kind of moment, but, uh, this is a big one.

The leak that has spewed hundreds of thousands of gallons of sewage and spilled it into the Mohawk River is taking the saying "that's crappy" to an all new level. And the problem is, this isn't the first time this month that this has taken place.

The Associated Press had this to say about this stinky local situation:

The state Department of Environmental Conservation says the latest spill in the city of Amsterdam occurred when a pipe broke Monday morning, sending sewage into an adjacent creek that flows into the river 30 miles northwest of Albany.

More than 300,000 gallons of untreated sewage is estimated to have spilled into the river. City officials say crews are working to repair the broken pipe.

The spill comes two weeks after more than 500,000 gallons of partially treated sewage spilled into the river because of an equipment failure at a city pump station.

Amsterdam officials blame the spills on the city's aging sewer system that's scheduled for upgrades next year.
