Well Known Area Businessman Tragically Killed

According to a report by News Channel 13, a well known Latham businessman (as well as father and grandfather) was tragically struck and killed by an oncoming car while pushing a leaf blower near his business on Troy Schenectady Road on Sunday.

The accident sadly took the life of a 69-year-old man who was the owner/operator of two well known places in Capital Region over the years.   Nicholas Huban was owner of On The Farm, a popular ice cream stand in Latham that was known for its tasty treats and down home feel.  Back in the mid-90's he owned Nick's Sneaky Pete's nightclub in Saratoga. Later in 2000, he opened NSP's in Albany which was located behind the OTB Tele theater on Central Avenue.

The accident, according to the report, took place in front of his ice cream stand and police say that the individuals inside the vehicle that struck Mr. Huban were not injured and they did attempt to resuscitate him.  They say he died on the way to the hospital.

I had the pleasure to get to know Mr. Huban over the years, and I can tell you this really shocked and saddened me.  It's been a while since the days of Sneaky Pete's in Albany, but whenever I was there hosting a radio station promo or just visiting as a guest, Mr. Huban treated me and everyone around him with tremendous respect.  He was a fantastic host, very professional and courteous, and always took good care of people.

A little over a year ago, our family paid our first and only visit to On the Farm in Latham during a spur-of-the-moment jaunt for ice cream and some grub. The place was clean, the service was great and the food was tasty.  It wasn't until I saw the story this morning about his passing that I learned that he had actually been the owner.

I wish I did know know it was his place.  It would have been nice to catch up with him and share just how much my family really enjoyed ourselves.

RIP Mr. Huban, you'll surely be missed.
