It isn't a new scam, but it seems to be making it back through the Capital Region. The scammers prey on the elderly and their unwavering love for their grandchildren and family.

The Bethlehem Police Department is getting the word out about a phone scam that has been making the rounds. It mainly targets older adults and is designed to trick them into sending money.

Here’s how it usually works. Someone calls pretending to be your grandchild, or says they’re a doctor, lawyer, or police officer calling for your grandchild. They claim there’s been an emergency and money is needed right away.

It can sound very real, especially if you’re worried about a loved one. The scammers use technology to make the voice sound like the loved one. But the police say to slow down and double-check before doing anything. Make sure that you are not too emotional and react quickly.

If you get a call like this, hang up. Call your grandchild directly. Or reach out to another family member to see if the story checks out. In most cases, this is just a scam, and the family member is okay.

Never send money or give out personal information unless you are completely sure who you are talking to. It can be difficult to tell, the scammers are becoming more savvy.

If something feels off or if you think you may have already been scammed, the Bethlehem Police want you to call them at 518-439-9973.

It is always better to be safe and talk it over with someone you trust before taking any action.
