Incredible ADK Footage Captures Moose Swimming in Open Water
Rare and Pretty Incredible
You don’t see this every day in the Adirondacks… even if you’ve lived there your whole life.
A rare and incredible moment was captured on video recently at Schroon Lake, as a cow moose was spotted swimming across the water toward Word of Life Island.
Two videos of the sighting were recently posted to Facebook.
One, shared by Mark Lentini on social media, shows the massive animal calmly making its way through the lake—something many longtime locals say they’ve never witnessed before.
That might be the most surprising part.

Quintessential ADK
In the comments, people who’ve spent decades in Schroon Lake couldn’t believe it. Some said they’ve been visiting since the 1970s or 90s and have never once seen a moose in the area. Others who grew up there echoed the same thing—proof that even in the Adirondacks, moments like this are still pretty rare.
Moose sightings in Upstate New York have become more common in recent years, especially deeper into the Adirondacks, but catching one on video—and swimming across a lake—is a whole different level.
One local added," Doesn’t get much more quintessential Adirondacks than that!"
Why It Made the Trip
Some speculated it could be searching for food, a safer area, or even a place to give birth. Either way, it’s a reminder that you never know what you might see in the Adirondacks… even in a place you think you know so well.
Another comment and video on Lentini's Facebook post came from Kim Wood McHugh, who added that the moose went "right by" their place up on Schroon Lake.
