New York Law: It’s Illegal To Break Window To Free Dog From Hot Car
While I shouldn't condone breaking the law, I have a feeling this is one you would break to save and animal in a hot vehicle.
Yes, I know. It is hard to believe this is illegal! But, according to New York State law, it is unlawful for a regular citizen to break a window in a hot vehicle to free an unattended dog or animal. According to the letter of the law, '...a police officer, peace officer, or peace officer acting as an agent of a duly incorporated humane society may take necessary steps to remove the animal or animals from the vehicle.'
So basically, if you see any pet in an unattended hot vehicle, you should call local police to rectify the situation. That said, would you break this law? I gotta say if it was me and I saw an animal overheating and time was of the essence to save the animal, I would be grabbing a tire iron from my car to set the animal free.
What would you do?
