Name an Albany County Snowplow and Make Winter History

Hey Albany County residents! Now is your chance to let your creativity shine. Do you know those snow plows that dig us out each winter? The county wants you to give them a name and a personality.

Albany County is putting its trust in its residents and adding a big dose of fun by hosting a contest to name seven of its snowplows early next year. That is right, snowplow naming. Why not give these hardworking winter heroes some personality?

Starting (Wednesday, December 11th), anyone in the county who is over 18 or has a parent’s permission can submit their best name ideas online at albanycountyny.gov until 11:59 p.m. on January 3rd. The big reveal will happen on February 10th during the Albany County legislative session, and the winning names will be proudly displayed on the plows themselves.

Of course, we cannot talk about naming contests without mentioning the legendary RRS Boaty McBoatface from 2016. While that viral sensation made headlines, Albany County is steering clear of names like Plowy McPlowface.

Submissions must be twelve characters or fewer, which also rules out brilliant ideas like The Big Snowplowski. A panel of judges will carefully review all entries to make sure only the best ideas make it.

The judges made up of local legislators and Albany County Public Works staff, will choose fifteen finalists by January 13th. They will look for creativity, connections to the county or New York, and wintery themes. Once the finalists are picked, the public will vote on the top seven names from January 15th to January 24th.

A few simple rules for submissions: avoid using personal or trademarked names, keep things family-friendly, and steer clear of political references. Now is the time to get creative.
