Large Supermarket Chain Plans To Close 5 Capital Region Stores
Due to "changing market conditions," a large supermarket chain has announced it will be closing 5 area locations.
Reporting the news that any local business is closing is always tough to pass along as it affects so many folks on so many levels, especially those whose employment could be affected.
While it is not as big of a chain as Price Chopper/Market 32 locally, New Jersey-based Shop Rite is a fairly large supermarket chain that operates over 300 stores according to its website. The company just announced plans to close its 5 stores here in the Capital Region.

According to a Times Union report, the 2 Shop Rite locations (And the gas stations) on Central Avenue in Albany and Colonie, along with the Niskayuna, North Greenbush, and Bethlehem stores will all be closing "in the coming weeks." The Times Union says the supermarket sent a letter to company vendors citing "...changing market conditions and the influx of food retailers in the area..." affect its ability to keep the sales momentum needed to keep the locations open.
