Proven: New Yorkers Live Longer In These Two Upstate Counties
For centuries, man has looked for the Fountain of Youth. Drinking water from and bathing in this mythical spring is supposed to keep you young forever, even to the point of eternal life. Explorers have looked for the Fountain of Youth in the Bahamas, Florida, and Japan, but those waters might actually be in Upstate New York.
Stacker confirmed data from New York State to find the counties with the longest life expectancy. The Capital Region has two of those counties, and one definitely has a connection to some very famous waters.
Columbia County starts the list at number 11. The average life expectancy of Columbia County’s residents is 80.4 years; only slightly more extended than the New York average. The county also has a great quality of life according to Stacker.
The other Capital Region county on the list breaks into the top ten, and it’s a place that people have been traveling to for its curative waters since before America’s birth. The Mohawk and Iroquois tribes bathed here for health. In the 1800s and early 1900s, tourists came by the thousands to “take the waters.” Maybe there’s something to the legends.
Saratoga County is into the top ten with an average life expectancy a full year over the New York average. The average Saratogan lives 81.3 years. This isn’t surprising as the county regularly ranks as one of New York’s healthiest. Stacker also says the quality of life around Saratoga Springs is #1 in the state.
By the way, the New York county with the longest life expectancy? New York County. On average, Manhattanites get almost three and a half more years than the rest of the state. Of course with rent the way it is in the City, who can afford those extra years?
