Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends, and the local law enforcement family of Joe Iachetta today after hearing that the 30-year-old K9 Sergeant with the Albany County Sheriff's Department was involved in a serious crash on Monday morning.

Iachetta, unconscious when emergency personnel arrived, had to be extricated from his vehicle and is currently undergoing multiple surgeries at Albany Medical Center.  As devastating as this news has been for local law enforcement and the community, it was learned on Monday that Iachetta's wife is pregnant and due with their seconds child in weeks.  A GoFundMe was created on Monday to help the family.

The incident took place on Central Avenue  in Colonie just after 6am when according to the Daily Gazette, Iachetta and a tractor-trailer were attempting to turn right into a Price Chopper parking lot.   That's when the tractor-trailer turned and struck the sargeant's SUV, ultimately pinning the vehicle underneath it.

A family friend created a GoFundMe on Monday and in 8 hours, it had roughly $50,000 dollars in donations made to the family.  Iachetta, according to the Daily Gazette lives in Colonie and is a seven-year veteran of the department.

In a message posted to Facebook,  Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple wote:

"As I write this, Joe is undergoing a lengthy surgery and is expected to have more surgery tonight. Joe is a 7 year veteran and lives in Colonie with his wife and child. They are expecting their second child in a few weeks. K9 Rice was uninjured in the collision. Please keep Joe in your prayers. He will have a long recovery ahead of him."  Craig Apple ACSO facebook
