It isn't often that you are able to see one of the most magnificent light shows in the sky, but this weekend you may get a look at the northern lights. We don't usually get to see the northern lights here in the Northeast, but Saturday night you may be able to. According to News 10 ABC, the natural light show, also known as aurora borealis, is caused when electrons that are emitted from the sun's surface come together with oxygen and nitrogen in the Earth's atmosphere. This causes electrons to release energy as light. It is a beautiful light display.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), you can see the northern lights in the Northeast and the Midwest from as far south as New York City and as far west as Chicago.

To get the best view, the skies must be free and clear of clouds. Also, you want to be away from city lights. There is a free app called My Aurora Forecast that you can download on your IPhone or Android that will show you the best times and places to look at the northern lights.
