Ready to hit your favorite freshwater fishing holes in the new year? You will have several opportunities to do so without a license in 2024.

It has become an annual tradition in New York state and Governor Hochul announced today that free fishing days will be returning for Empire State anglers to enjoy in 2024.

During the six free fishing dates listed below, the Governor's office says "...the fishing license requirement is waived for freshwater fishing on New York’s waters."

Governor Hochul added “The Free Fishing Days program provides a great opportunity for aspiring anglers to try freshwater fishing for the first time or former anglers to reconnect with one of America’s favorite pastimes. New York is blessed with an abundance of freshwater lakes, ponds, streams, and rivers, allowing for memorable fishing experiences that increase tourism and benefit the economy.”

The Governor's office says the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NY DEC) created the fishing program in 1991 to not only encourage newbies to try out the sport but also to promote conservation through the DEC license program.

While the license fees are waived on the dates below, all other freshwater fishing regulations remain in effect, according to the NY DEC.
