Do You Agree? Capital Region District Fighting for 'Indians' Name

The New York State Education Commission, and the Cambridge School District, are at odds over the district's use of "Indians" as their moniker.

The district has set a deadline, and instead of obliging, the district is pushing back.

As of July 1st, All School Districts Must Change Their Mascots

WNYT reported on the story, stating that the school district was informed that they must remove every mention of their name and mascot, which is currently "the Indians", from their schools. It was also reported that the school district has until July of 2022 to make the change, or else, they'll face the consequences.

Wanting to show that they take this ordinance seriously, the Education Commission is punishing schools who fail to comply right where it hurts: their wallets. Schools will lose state funding if they do not comply with the rules by the time July rolls around, raising the stakes on an already crucial decision that multiple districts are currently facing.

Cambridge School District, as of right now at least, seem ready to dig their heels in for the long haul on this one.

That being said, funding is funding, and as the fight drags on into the New Year, the school district edges closer to a few drastic measures being taken.
