Car Theft Is Rampant In Upstate New York, Why Is The Capital Region Different?
Your car should be one of your most prized possessions. Alongside your house, it's one of the largest investments you'll make, and it's vital to the modern age.

Unlike a home, unfortunately, cars are susceptible to theft, and New York isn't exactly the safest place to leave your car unattended. That is, except for the Capital Region.

Car Theft in New York State
Reports have begun to release for the previous year's crime statistics, and Car Theft is one of the major points. Across New York, metropolitan areas are experiencing thousands per year, with most being centralized in Upstate.
This makes sense, public transit is kind of NYC's whole thing, but it's still concerning nonetheless. Monroe and Erie counties were atop the leaderboard for upstate, with around 4,000 car thefts reported in 2024 per county. These figures, however, were still a massive decrease from their numbers in 2023. The Capital Region is a little different.
Capital Region's Car Thefts
Despite also being in Upstate, the Capital Region sees drastically less Car Theft than the rest of the state. While most counties are recording one to four thousand a year, we're sitting pretty with just a few hundred.
Albany County only saw 431, and Rensselaer only saw 212. There isn't a massive population difference, so why do we see less? Personally, I believe it's the culture. The Capital Region has a very distinct cultural identity, and in my experience, we look out for one another. Sure, crime will still happen, it's a fact of life, but when you treat your neighbors like family, it's hard to justify ruining someone else's week.
