Capital Region Tipping Off with a Big High School Hoops Game
Most high school basketball players didn't get to play in front of their friends and family last season, some didn't get to play at all. Though wearing masks is being required at most schools, at least these seniors will be able to play with fans in the stands. Tuesday night features two of the Capital Region's better boys basketball teams meeting up. One played last year. One did not.
Some teams are already underway and others tip off this week. Tuesday night there will be a big non-conference, cross sectional game in Clifton Park. Section II powerhouse Shenendahowa is hosting Kingston (1-0) for their first game of the season at 6:30pm. That is a pretty good battle to start the season. The Plainsmen and the Kingston Tigers will meet 3 times for non-conference match-ups this season.
The Tigers are off to a fast start. Like many schools, until Friday night, Kingston had not played a basketball game since March of 2020. According to Mike Stribl of dailyfreeman.com, Kingston 'jumped out to a 21-3 lead and later fought off a comeback bid to defeat Goshen 68-47 in their debut at the Kate Walton Field House. “For the first night, I’m happy with our very good effort and energy,” Kingston coach Ron Kelder said. “I think execution will only get better.”
Shenendahowa head coach Paul Yattaw and his team that includes 5 seniors will have their work cut out for them against a talented Kingston team. Stribl noted that the Tigers were led by Ke’montae Thawe who had 21 points, plus seven rebounds and four steals, while Ryan McCardle added 18 points, seven rebounds and three steals.
