People in the Albany area will soon have another choice to go and do their grocery shopping – In Sears, Colonie Center. Whole Foods is going to lease about 32,000 square feet of space on the lower level of Sears.

I saw a story on YNN about the organic and natural foods grocer will be opening their new store in 2014.

Scott Blaine told us about another grocery store just down Wolf Road, Trader Joe’s is expected to open sometime this year, but according to a story in the Business Review, there may still be a delay. Hannaford has been further down on Wolf Road for awhile, and they just renovated and celebrated a grand reopening.

In addition to the stores I mentioned, we have recently seen Shop Rite open new stores in the area. Of course we also have Price Chopper, Aldi, Walmart Supercenters, The Fresh Market in Latham and locally owned Honest Weight Food Co-op.(I hope I didn't miss any.)

Hopefully all of this competition will help keep grocery prices down. This is what I call variety. If you can’t find the groceries that you want with all of the choices of stores, then it probably doesn’t exist.
