Amtrak’s Albany To NYC Route Is Finally Being Fully Restored
Maybe it's because I haven't lived up here long enough, but I still can't get enough of New York City. There's a certain feeling I get every time I walk out of Penn Station that I try to chase every day of my life.

Like most others in the Capital Region, I make my trips down with Amtrak, but the service has been lackluster for some time now. That's finally about to change.

Why Was Amtrak's Service Delayed?
If you regularly take the Empire Service trains between Albany and NYC, you may have noticed their service has been slowly dwindling. There's nowhere near as many trains running, and that's been hiking prices up.
This is because of ongoing construction to the East River Tunnel, which is necessary for most lines to reach the city. The lines have been cut back since April of 2025, but the time has come for them to finally get back on the rails.
Service is Being Restored
Aside from day-trips to the Big Apple, this service is a necessity for many commuting to and from NYC every day, and Governor Hochul knows this. So, on Tuesday, January 27th, she announced that the Empire Service will be restoring all suspended or combined trains in early March of 2026.
Good news can't come without some bad news, unfortunately. In the same press release, the Governor stated that the initially proposed ALB-Grand Central Metro-North line will not be moving forward. Luckily, with Amtrak getting back to full capacity, there's not much of a reason for that line to move forward anymore.
