One of my favorite childhood memories is going to the drive-in theatre to see a movie. It was so exciting to put on my pj's, grab my pillow, a blanket and jump in the family station wagon to see Willie Wonka & The Chocolate Factory or some other 1970's family flick. The movie itself didn't matter, it was the adventure!

Get ready to grab a pillow and the kids as the 2022 drive-in movie season is kicking off!

We are fortunate to have several drive-in theatre's to choose from in New York State. When I was a kid we had a bunch to choose from in Connecticut but I believe the entire state only has 2 today.

In the Capital Region alone there are more than half-a-dozen drive-in theatres and most have either recently opened or are opening this weekend. As you will see while scrolling through the list below many of the theatres have multiple screens and typically you will have a double-feature option.

Remember those metal speakers that you would hang on your window to listen to the movie? How many times would someone drive away without removing the speaker first?

According to History.com, drive-in theatres were originally called park-in theatres and it cost no more than $1 for the family to see a movie. New York State had one of the biggest drive-ins in the country! The All-Weather Drive-In of Copiague was able to accommodate 2,500 cars! Can you imagine that? This theatre also had a kid’s playground and a full service restaurant!
