Rumors are swirling this morning that U.S. supermarket chain Albertsons Companies Inc is in talks to acquire Price Chopper for around $1 billion!

Price Chopper operates around130 stores across the northeast, in New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts.  Most of them are within driving distance of the Capital Region!

The Golub family has owned Price Chopper for more than eight decades, so talk of a sale is a pretty big deal.

Sources are being asked not to be identified because the sale is confidential, it's possible for the deal negotiations to fall through.

Both companies, Albertsons and Price Chopper declined to comment. In fact, when the Times Union contacted Mona Golub, spokeswoman for the company, said she does not comment on rumors.

Albertsons is based in Boise, Idaho, and is owned by private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management LP who own and operate more than 2,200 supermarkets.
