Rexford Student in Scripps National Spelling Bee [PHOTO]
The Scripps National Spelling Bee is underway and we have a local contestant to root for, right from Rexford!
I give so much credit to every single student in this competition who can spell words that I rely on autocorrect to help me with. The preliminaries for the spelling bee were Tuesday and Wednesday with the finals on Thursday, May 30th. If you're interested in watching, the finale will air on ESPN on Thursday 8:30pm-10:30pm.
I always like to see if there's a student from the area participating so that we can route for them and luckily, there is! Speller number 248 is Jaeho Lee from Rexford, NY who is a 7th grader at Acadia Middle School in the Shenendehowa School District. The 13-year-old said that he realized he could read while he was watching closed captioning on television.
So far, he's had to spell the word "Croci," or "any of a genus (Crocus) of herbs of the iris family developing from corms and having solitary long-tubed flowers and slender linear leaves," according to Merriam-Webster. You can see if he continues starting today at 8:00AM-4:30PM.
