Prescription drugs can be an incredible help for those who suffer from various illnesses and medical issues, but they can also be a huge danger when they fall into the wrong hands.

It's important to keep track of your prescriptions, whether that means keeping them locked up, or disposing of them properly.

Disposing of Prescription Drugs Properly

Someone getting into your prescriptions, whether on purpose or accident, can lead to tragedy. That's why the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) encourages thoughtful disposal of unused prescriptions.

That doesn't just mean flushing them down the toilet or tossing them in the garbage. This too, can lead to issues down the line with certain medicines. It's important to know exactly how to dispose of these medications, but if you're not entirely sure, the DEA is here to help.

Prescription Drug Takeback Day

October 25th, 2025 is National Prescription Drug Takeback Day. The biannual event will take place across the Capital Region from 10a.m. to 2p.m., allowing residents to safely and anonymously dispose of their unused medications.

There are several locations scattered across the region. You can find the location closest to you at the DEA Website. When disposing at these events, you must return them in either a sealed back or the original packaging, ensuring it cannot be tampered with.

If you are unable to make this event, but would still like to dispose of your unused medications, check with your local pharmacy, who may offer their own takeback program, or with an DEA-authorized collector in the community.
