New York Thruway Shut Down After Massive Tractor Trailer Fire
Sometimes we're reminded just how fragile our world really is. Sure, we feel like we've conquered the earth, but one wrong move and we effectively end up back at the stone ages.
Much like Prometheus, who stole the gift of fire and was punished for it, sometimes it feels like we, too, have tried to steal fire from the gods...

Massive Fire on the Roads
On the morning of January 6th, 2026, a tractor trailer travelling down Interstate 90 near Mindenville caught fire. Typically, this would be an issue that was easily resolved, except for one issue: this was a tanker carrying compressed natural gas.
This, obviously, was a massive issue, and rescue crews immediately made their way to the site to ensure the situation didn't get out of hand. By 9:25 a.m., just 20-ish minutes after the initial incident, both sides of the Thruway between Exit 29A (Little Falls) and Exit 29 (Canajoharie) were closed.
The Cleanup
The first step was ensuring everyone in the surrounding area was safe. Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville Central School District and Fort Plain Central School District both opened their schools as evacuation zones, making sure around 165 people were safe and free of harm.
The road was declared in "emergency mode" for around two hours until 11a.m., when it was deemed safe enough. No injuries were reported, and no major damage occurred. For a moment on the brink of disaster, Montgomery County Sheriff's Office stayed cool under pressure and made sure that their community, and the roads connecting them, were safe.
