New York Extended Unemployment Benefits Set to Expire Next Month

Are you an unemployed New Yorker wondering how much longer you will be able to collect pandemic related Extended Benefits? You aren't alone and time is running out. Effective August 9, 2021, Extended Benefits (EB) will be available for a maximum of 13 weeks.

In other words, once August arrives, no new claims will be considered pandemic related. If you are a New York claimant, that received 13+ weeks of extended benefits, you will no longer be eligible for EB on that existing claim following the benefit week of August 9, 2021. Do not stop certifying. Once a claimant has exhausted their existing extended benefit claim, they will get an email and a text notifying them the EB has run its course.

There is some good news for the unemployed however, you may still be eligible for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) or Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC) and Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC). Under Federal Law these benefits will be available until September 5, 2021.

New York's unemployment rate is above the national average of 5.8% but according to Spectrum News, New York's unemployment rate dropped below 8% in June and landed at 7.7%. Prior to the pandemic our state jobless rate was below below 4%.
