New York Says “No” To Data Centers In New Executive Order

Stopping Data Centers in New York

On July 14th, New York State Governor Kathy Hochul signed a landmark executive order that will put a pause on new, hyperscale data centers in New York State, the first of its kind in the nation.

A massive data center

Hochul states that this order is meant to protect Ratepayers, the Environment, and New Yorkers as a whole. Data centers are hiking utility bills of locals, and Hochul wants no part in it, so she's set this pause to work out a standard to hold these data centers to.

No More Data Centers... Ever?

This isn't the case. Hochul isn't killing the idea of Data Centers as a whole, she's simply placing a year-long pause on their development while attempting to find a solution that works for both parties.

As the yearlong pause comes to a close, the government will take another look at energy demand, water use and quality and air quality to determine if the moratorium should be lifted.

As I said, this is the first of its kind in America, and other states will likely begin to follow suit, as public outrage around the construction of Data Centers grows higher and higher.
