Mama Dog and Puppies Abandoned in Menands

A heartbreaking discovery in Albany County has left the community shaken, and the look on the mama dog's face speaks volumes.  Who could do this?

The Colonie Police Department says a mother dog and her litter of puppies were found abandoned near 85 Broadway in Menands.

As one commenter put it: “She’s not disposable—someone will love her and her babies. Karma will deliver the justice.”

According to a report from Sidewinder Photography, the mama had been tied to a bench while her puppies were left inside a nearby cardboard box. Officers, along with Colonie Animal Control, quickly stepped in to care for the dogs and launch an investigation.

Outrage and Emotion

Photos of the distressed-looking mother and her pups sparked outrage and emotion on Facebook, as animal abuse and abandonment have become all too common in the Capital Region.

“Poor mama, I couldn’t imagine what she was feeling… scared, I’m sure,” wrote one commenter. Another added, “Looks like mom took a hit in her mouth...so sad.”

Others were furious at whoever left them behind:

“This is WHY we need stricter animal abuse laws!” one person posted. “Animals are not disposable. This poor mama and her babies look so sad—the owner needs jail time.”

Many people expressed relief that someone spotted the dogs before tragedy struck.

“So glad somebody found them,” one commenter said. Another noted, “The animal shelter is right there—why couldn’t they just bring them in?”

Perhaps the most powerful reactions came from those who saw pain in the mama’s face: “She looks like she is crying,” one woman wrote.

Another said, “Mama looks so incredibly defeated.”

What You Can Do

If you ever witness animal cruelty or believe an animal is in danger, don’t hesitate — report it immediately to local law enforcement, your local SPCA, or other humane agencies.

In 2010, the Albany County Legislature established the Animal Abuser Registry (Local Law K), which is managed by the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society. This registry was designed to protect animals and inform the public.l
