WATCH-Heroic New York State Trooper Rescues Dog From Icy Waters
It's tricky this time of year in Upstate New York. Our temperatures fluctuate, and sometimes ice isn't safe. A woman was walking her dog when the ice gave way. That's when the New York State Police came to the rescue, literally.
Around 8:50 am on Saturday, January 10th, a woman and her black lab were walking near icy waters in Herkimer County. They were walking in the Industrial Park in Little Falls.
The incident took place near the barge canal. When the woman's dog got near the water, the dog fell in, and the woman fell into the canal in an attempt to rescue her dog.

The woman was rescued by the Little Falls Fire and Police Departments, but the dog was starting to go further under the icy waters. That's when Trooper Michael Szarek used a water rescue rope, but the dog couldn't get a hold of it.
Then, Trooper Szarek and Officer Austin got into the water, sent another rope and apparatus toward the dog, and he grabbed on. They pulled the dog in and out of the icy water and onto shore.
Here is the YouTube video of the rescue from the bodycam of the officer who was released by the New York State Troopers.
Neither the dog nor the woman was seriously injured. You can hear the woman's pleas to help her dog and the shouts of gratitude when the officer and the Trooper pulled him to safety.
