Lights Out? Albany PAL Teases about Future of Popular Xmas Display
Normally by this time of year, you see the Xmas displays starting to go up throughout the park. I live around the corner from Washington Park - there are no signs, or displays, not even a single bulb.
I think it's safe to say there will be no Lights in the Park this holiday season, but event organizers are hopeful that Capital Region residents haven't seen the last of these iconic illuminations.
According to the press release sent from PAL, the "important" conference on Thursday may shed some light on its future - perhaps even, outside of Washington Park.
"The Albany Police Athletic League (PAL) will make an important announcement regarding their premiere fundraising lights shows on Thursday, October 27th, 2022 at 3:30 p.m. at the Albany PAL Center."
The event, which is not open to the public, will address information "circulating about the status of the show, and on Thursday, PAL’s Executive Director Leonard Ricchiuti will deliver the news."
Last Winter, it became pretty public that the partnership between the City of Albany and the Albany PAL was less-than-stellar. Sensing that it may be my family's last ride through Capital Holiday Lights in the Park, I couldn't help but get a little emotional.
Here's what I wrote:
When my son Brody was 2 or 3-years-old, a few times a week I would trek across the river into Troy on late afternoons to get from daycare and bring him back to my home in Albany near Washington Park.
Brody's mom and I co-parent together, and to this day, both households go a few days a week without seeing him. When Brody was much younger, there were days that I felt like he and I weren't as connected as I would have liked - and I would beat myself up over it.
