Joey Chestnut is America’s Most Patriotic Athlete
I will hear no other arguments on this topic. No athlete delivers for his country on the 4th of July more often than Joey Chestnut. Joey Chestnut is everything America *should* be on Independence Day.
Think about it, Joey Chestnut is doing what most Americans do on the 4th of July. He's at the world's best barbecue, and is eating like there's no tomorrow. The only difference is, while uncles and cousins throw in the towel, not able to eat another bite, Joey Chestnut keeps eating. He's eating not just for himself, but for his country.
He's what every parent wants their son or daughter to be when they grow up.
Okay, that bit of sarcasm may be a bit over the top. But, Joey Chestnut has played a huge role in making the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest a must-watch event every 4th of July. He emerged onto the scene in 2005, finishing third in the contest, before finally de-throning reigning champion Takeru "Tsunami" Kobayashi in 2007. He won the competition on eight straight Fourth of July's, finally faltering in 2015. He redeemed himself in 2016, and has not lost since.
Now, I get it. Some incredible moments have happened on the Fourth of July. Lou Gehrig's famous speech, Richard Petty's 200th win and Dave Righetti's no-hitter all come to mind. That said, when it comes to consistency, excellence and performance under pressure, you can't go against Joey Chestnut. He puts his health and wellness on the line for our entertainment and intrigue, captivating a nation as he scarfs down something most people won't even eat anymore.
Now that, is a national sports hero. We thank you, Joey.
