New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) conducted 5 missions in the last week. Sadly two of those missions didn't have a happy outcome as two individuals lost their lives.

In a period of 48-hours, DEC officials raced to save lives around New York State. From August 22nd at 4pm until August 23rd at 9pm, Forest Rangers teamed with local emergency services on 5 missions ranging from falls, injuries, drowning and one mysterious death still under investigation. Here's the timeline.

August 22nd - 4:05pm - Hunter, NY - Forest Rangers responded to Kaaterskill Falls for a report of a 21-year-old from Long Island who had fallen down an embankment while walking to a swimming area. First Aid was provided for multiple cuts and bruises to the subject’s face.

August 22nd - 6:10pm - Harrietstown, NY - A boater had jumped into the water from a pontoon boat, in Lower Saranac Lake, and hadn’t been seen since. A rescue team started a search effort. On August 24th at 11:02am, NYSP divers located the 76-year-old deceased.

August 23rd - 5:54pm - Arietta, NY - Forest Rangers responded to a call for a hiker who had fallen on the Echo Cliff trail. Speculator EMS was already with the 60-year-old from East Aurora. Rangers helped EMS carry the subject approximately one-half mile out to the trailhead.

August 23rd - 6pm - North Elba, NY - Forest Rangers responded to a call for a hiker who had rolled their ankle on Algonquin Mountain near the Wright junction. At 7:10 p.m., Ranger Sabo reached the 29-year-old and their hiking partner and splinted the hiker’s ankle.

August 23rd - 9:13pm - North Elba, NY - Ray Brook Dispatch received a call from Essex County reporting an unresponsive subject at Marcy Dam. Forest Rangers spoke to the caller and instructed them to obtain an automated external defibrillator from the Outpost and follow the instructions while additional Rangers responded and transported Lake Placid EMS to Marcy Dam via UTV. The 69-year-old from Wappingers Falls was pronounced dead at the scene. New York State Police are investigating.
