It’s Better for the Environment but Should We Be Charged Extra?
I already spend enough money going grocery shopping and sometimes I'm forgetful. Now, if this task force get what they want, I'm going to be charged just for forgetting!
I know that plastic bags aren't the safest things for the environment. Honestly, I try to use cloth bags anytime I can, so much so that I have three in my car at all times. Sometimes, I just forget and now it could cost me money.
Created in 2017, the Plastic Bag Task Force has been working on studies to fix the plastic bag problem. We, as a society, are pretty dependent on plastic bags and they're very harmful to the environment so the task force has come up with 8 solutions to fix that, according to NY Upstate.
The state has already shot down the attempt in New York City at charging 5 cents per plastic bag. Their options were: to strengthen and enforce the NYS Plastic Bag Reduction, Reuse and Recycling Act, have the bag manufacturers pay for recycling costs, impliment a fee on single-use bags or each transaction with plastic or paper bags, or ban the plastic bags altogether.
Is 5 cents per bag a lot? Not really. Is it best for the environment if we didn't use plastic bags anymore? Of course, but I can't imagine overhauling plastic bags is going to be an easy task.
