Reports of an unexpected sidebar story are currently developing regarding the deeply tragic and horrific news that we learned on Monday.  The three women and six children who were ambushed and slaughtered Monday by a Mexican cartel had alleged ties to the Capital Region with family members serving as part of the Keith Raniere's NXIVM, according to the Times Union. The group of nine that was savagely shot, some left to die in burning cars, did have dual-citizenship in both Mexico and the United States and are believed to be members of a Morman group that lived in Northern Mexico and used to recruit young women to serve Raniere here in the Capital Region.

According to the Times Union, the ambushed group (which also included twin babies) were part of a Mormon sect that lived in northern Mexico.  The group, it is being reported,  was partly responsible for recruiting teenagers into the NVIVM cult to serve Keith Raniere, the deranged mastermind who operated out of Halfmoon.

According to the New York Post, it's unclear if the victims were ambushed by the cartel because of their ties to NVIVM or it was a case of mistaken identity.

The Heavy is reporting that Julian LeBaron,  a spokesperson and family member of those killed, was used in a recruitment video for NXIVM and says that the family has battled Mexican cartels for years. The recruiting video, according to the Heavy, was "offered (by Raniere) coaching and services as a way to solve the country’s (Mexico's) problems.
