Animal Cruelty: The Worst of the Worst

For animal lovers, few stories are more upsetting than those involving cruelty or neglect.

Unfortunately, we've reported far too many across the Capital Region and Upstate New York about animals allegedly abandoned and left to fend for themselves, disturbing hoarding situations, and cases involving dogs, cats, horses, and other animals found living in deplorable conditions.

While the details can be heartbreaking, knowing who has been convicted of animal cruelty can serve an important purpose: helping prevent animals from being placed into potentially dangerous situations in the future.

Albany County Animal Abuser Registry

In 2010, the Albany County Legislature established its Animal Abuser Registry through Local Law K. The registry, managed by the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, provides the public with information about individuals convicted of animal cruelty.

As of our latest review, 42 Upstate New York residents are listed on the Albany County Animal Abuser Registry.

According to the registry, those listed have been convicted of animal cruelty and are prohibited from owning, possessing, residing with, or intentionally having physical contact with an animal.

What You Can Do

If you witness suspected animal cruelty or believe an animal is in immediate danger, contact local law enforcement or an appropriate animal welfare organization.

The registry can also be an important resource for anyone considering placing an animal in another person's care.

Below are the 42 individuals currently listed on the Albany County Animal Abuser Registry.
