The Fascinating History Of Albany’s Most Widespread Invention
When nature calls, you answer. Going to the bathroom is a natural part of life, but it hasn't always been as easy as it is today.
With outhouses stuck outside, and basic holes in the ground not doing the trick, inventors worked for years to refine the experience, bringing toilets, sinks, and other ammenities to our restrooms. One of the most important parts of that experience originated right here in Albany, NY.
The Early Days of T.P
While Toilets and Toilet Paper had been used since the late 16th century, their use did not become commonplace until the late 19th century, with the boom of the industrial revolution. The earliest commercial toilet paper was developed by a man named Joseph Gayetty, who sold individual sheets soaked in aloe. These did not sell well, and eventually, they ceased being made.
Next up, came the Scott brothers (Edward, Clarence & Thomas). The three are allegedly also from Upstate New York, hailing from Saratoga County. However, they too, failed in their endeavor.

Seth Wheeler
This all changed when Seth Wheeler, of Albany, NY stepped onto the scene. Seth was originally from Columbia County, but moved to the Capital in 1849 when his father's company moved there.
In 1871, he successfully filed a patent for a machine that manufactured perforated toilet paper, which allowed for rolls to be created, and individual pieces torn off. While it took some time for the invention to kick off, it certainly did in fair time. Now, it's one of the most widely used products in the world, with hundreds of manufacturers all using the foundation that an Albany man built.
