Sky Port Diner in Glenville Will Close
In the late 1950s owner John Dewey bought a hot dog stand at 35 Freemans Bridge Road in Glenville and turned it into the Sky Port Diner. It opened in 1957. It was a family affair as John ran the restaurant with his daughters. They eventually took it over and became owners.
Owner Patty Sherman, one of John's daughters, said it was "time to retire". She went on to tell the Daily Gazette,
We really appreciate everything the community has done for us, and thank them for their loyal support over the years.
Sky Port Diner Received International Notariety
Sky Port had a "mascot" in the early 2000s. It was a goldfish named Dick. Dick was struggling to swim in his tank so the customers designed a special floatation device made from straws, string, fishing bobbers, and gauze. It worked and Dick was able to swim out his last couple of years. He died in 2003 at 17! The story of Dick was known around the world. Sky Port Diner immortalized Dick by putting a cartoon drawing of him on all of its menus.
What Will Happen to The Sky Port Diner?
The owner says there is a potential buyer who may be turning it into a bakery but did not say who would be taking over the space.
Sky Port Diner will close on December 31st.
