There are new laws coming into effect in 2020 and without knowing what they are, you may already be breaking one.

News10 put together a list of a bunch of laws that are either changing or coming into effect with the new year. Since most of these aren't widely advertised, here's a list of some of the more common ones that you should know about.

  • Brianna's Law in regards to boating safety has been expanded. Now, "individuals born after Jan. 1, 1993 must complete a boater safety course before operating a motorized watercraft."
  • Better access to IVF: more insurance policies must cover IVFs
  • 16 and 17-year-olds will be able to pre-register to vote so that when they turn 18, they're already registered
  • As of January 15th, adoptees will be able to access their birth certificates after the age of 18
  • Minimum wage is increasing to $12.50 in the Capital Region
  • As of March 1st, plastic bags will not be available anywhere "that is required to pay New York state taxes"
  • As of August 12th, New Yorkers have three years to file sexual harassment
  • As of September 1st, the legal limit for hunters to be considered intoxicated was lowered to .08 from .10
