Walmart Super Center in Albany, What the Heck’s Going On In There?

When was the last time you were at the Walmart on Washington Avenue Extension in Albany? I was there last night and I scaffolding, temporary walls and signs with the message "We are remodeling. Please excuse our appearance.". This place is huge! Are they making it even bigger?

According to Albany.com, the 260,000 square foot Walmart Super Center in the Capital city is the largest location is the United States. It's nearly 100,000 square feet larger than the average Walmart and 258,000 square feet bigger than the smallest Walmart located in Georgia. .

This Walmart has a supermarket, department store, pharmacy, vision center, hardware and toys! What could they be adding or improving?

This is no small renovation or remodel. This is a major project. Is a new Chic-fil-A satellite restaurant destined for this store? Not likely.

I tried to see if any tools or equipment would shine a light on this project. I don't see anything aside from a very neat working area. Maybe this will be a Stewart's inside Walmart! Nah, even less likely.

This is a floor to ceiling project all of which is focused in the center of the store.

Everyone was curious as to what might be happening but nobody was asking. I couldn't take it anymore and had to ask. Actually my girlfriend asked because I was too stubborn.

I have to tell you, the answer was a bit of a letdown. They are putting in new escalators! One one hand, who cares? On the other hand, maybe my cart won't get stuck halfway down to the lower floor anymore.

The associate that we spoke with didn't have a timeline for completion but before you know it the magic of the shopping cart escalator will be back, better than ever.
