Get ready to look up and be dazzled by the show in the night sky. A meteor shower starts today (April 16th) and happens through April 22nd. The Lyrid meteor shower is known to display fireballs and many shooting stars.

What Is The Lyrid Meteor Shower?

It's one of the oldest meteor showers and is known for its fast and bright meteors.  According to Mlive.com,  it isn't as bright as the Perseids in August. But the Lyrids meteor shower can produce as many as one hundred meteors or shooting stars per hour when it's very active. You should be able to witness ten to twenty during its peak.

When Can We View the Lyrids Meteor Shower in Upstate NY?

You can view the Lyrid meteor shower starting tonight (April 16th), and it should be done by April 26th. Those of us in Upstate New York will see the most shooting stars and fireballs at its peak, which is the pre-dawn hours of Tuesday, April 22nd.

How Do We Ensure We Can Get The Best View of the Lyrids Meteor Shower?

The moon is in a crescent phase, which means the skies will be dark enough for viewing. But you need to be at least twenty-five miles away from a town or city so that the lights won't interfere. Also, set up about three hours early so your eyes will adjust to the night sky. The best places to view the Lyrids in Upstate New York are farms, the Adirondacks, and rural areas.
