Therapy Dogs Help Kids At St. Jude [PHOTO]
When visiting St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee a couple of weeks ago, there were so many amazing programs that bring smiles to the children's faces. One that stood out to me was Doggy Daze. At St. Jude, everyone has a special role. Whether it's the doctors, the cafeteria workers or the hundreds of volunteers, everyone has a unique purpose. Even the furry ones.
Doggy Daze is a therapy program that helps patients and their families. It allows down time with specially trained therapy dogs who have volunteer handlers. A Child Life specialist supervises the play and visit with the therapy dog for about an hour while the child is undergoing treatment.
Each dog has a trading card so the patient can get to know their new furry friend. Some children have pets at home and are unable to see them. The Doggy Daze program gives them, not only therapy, but a little feeling of home and comfort.
