There is something that just hits differently about a college bar.

Whether you are a college student blowing off some steam after a big exam or reliving your glory years at your alma mater, college bars contain a joyous atmosphere full of good times, great music, and most importantly, cheap drinks!

From my days as a student at Rutgers University in New Jersey, I still remember my favorites like it was yesterday (In case you're curious - Olde Queens Tavern, Knight Club, and the now closed Plum Street Pub).

But enough of me going down memory lane! While we have a long list of great college bars in the Capital Region, New York City, and throughout the state, a Syracuse college hangout has earned the honor of the best college bar in the state.

Literally one block off campus, Faegan's is where Orange students can find great daily drink specials — and even a challenge! Tuesday nights are for World Beer Tours, where patrons can drink beers from around the world and, if they finish them all in the allotted time, get their name and year added to the World Beer Tour poster. They also have special deals for Syracuse seniors on Sundays.

Syracuse University has a reputation for being one of the biggest party schools in the nation, so it should come as no surprise that a bar frequented by Orange students is tops in the Empire State.

What makes a dive bar? Back in the day, it was usually a hole in the wall bar, tucked around some dimly lit corner of town. A place where people (mostly men) went after a hard days work for a hard night of drinking. No "respectable folks" would go to a dive bar. But, man that has all changed! Dive bars carry with them a sense of nostalgia, a sense of history and a sense of fun. Most have been around for 50, 60, and more years. They were our first college bars because the beer was cheap and everyone went there! A lot of them are still around. They have added kitchens, live music, and sports TVs.
