According to Space.com, on the night of September 17th, Upstate New York will be treated to an incredible celestial event. There will not only be a supermoon but you can witness a partial lunar eclipse.

So, what exactly is a supermoon? It’s when the full moon is at its closest point to Earth, which makes it look bigger and brighter than usual. This particular one is called the Harvest Moon, signaling the start of autumn. You’ll notice how it lights the fields, trees, and hills in a beautiful, almost magical glow.

But that’s not all. We’re also getting a partial lunar eclipse on the same night! As the Earth moves between the sun and the moon, part of the moon will slip into the Earth’s shadow. While it won’t be a total eclipse, where the moon is completely darkened, you’ll see a striking contrast as part of the moon fades into shadow while the rest stays lit up. It will be just a small portion of the moon.

When Will This Happen?

The eclipse will begin around 11:30 p.m. and hit its peak around 1:00 a.m., giving you plenty of time to step outside, look up, and take in the show. Whether you’re a night owl or just curious about the wonders above, this is a perfect chance to experience some sky magic right from your backyard.
