Stewart’s Shops is looking to shake things up in Saratoga Springs. The plan is to build a bigger and better store on South Broadway that will replace a Stewart's Express and a neighboring house.

This project has actually been in the works for a few years, but it ran into delays because of the house next door. Some people believed the home had historical value, which led the city to deny permission to demolish it at first.

Did The House Hold Up The Project?

Stewart’s challenged that decision in court, basically arguing that while the house is more than one hundred years old, it does not have real historical significance. The state later backed that up, saying it does not qualify for historic protection.

As part of the new design, the city asked Stewart’s to include a usable second floor in the building. That space is planned to look like a condo, but it will not be available for the public to rent or buy. Instead, the company says it would likely be used internally, similar to a location in Lake Placid where employees can enter a lottery to stay for a weekend.

What Will The Condo Be Used For?

Right now, Stewart’s has not decided exactly how the upstairs space would be used at this location. Updated plans show a two-story building with a front porch style design, brick details, and a covered outdoor area on the upper level as the proposal continues moving through the approval process.
