With temperatures close to 100 in the Saturday forecast, Saratoga Race Course is taking precautions to protect the horses and jockeys.

It does not happen often, but because of the extreme heat expected Saturday  NYRA announced they are cancelling Saturday's race card. In a NYRA Press Release New York State Gaming Commission Equine Medical Director Dr. Scott E. Palmer said "This is a responsible and prudent decision that aligns with our New York Racetrack Heat Management Protocol designed to ensure safe racing for all participants." This is the first time since 2006 a race card has been called due to hot weather.

It's definitely a bummer that the Saturday card was called, especially for those travelling to the area for a day of racing. But, the right call. And hey if your local, just throw some extra ice in the cooler to keep your drinks cold until Sunday!
