I can only imagine what was going through this officer's mind as he listened to a radio call congratulating him on his retirement.  I got choked up watching this Saratoga Springs Police Officer keep it all together while he got one final call over the radio.

On Friday afternoon, a Saratoga Springs Police Officer sat in his patrol car as a call came over the radio from the dispatcher.  The officer fidgeted somewhat curiously as it was announced  that she had "some news" regarding Officer John Lanzara. The video was shared by the Saratoga Springs Police Department.

Officer Lanzara clicked his radio to communicate back to dispatch announcing that he was there and ready to receive the information.  "1-7 is on, go ahead," the officer said as he prepared himself for what was about to happen next.

"It is with great pleasure that we are able to announce that after 24 years of dedicated service to the Saratoga Springs Police Department and to the community of the city of Saratoga Springs, Officer Lanzara will be retiring from the Saratoga Springs Police Department," the dispatch said.

The retiring officer, choking back emotion, listened intently.  "Thank you for your hard work and dedication...you will be truly missed," she said. And then, the final words, "Officer Lanzara, you are officially out of service..."

After 24 years of service, Lanzara reached for his radio, hesitated for a brief moment, and then responded one final time, "17 copies...thank you very much" he said.

His response was quick and to the point.  He didn't allow himself to get over emotional, but clearly he was touched by the moment as was I.

Congratulations to Officer John Lanzara from the Saratoga Springs Police Department. Enjoy your retirement, sir and thank you for your service.
