State Police in New York Warn of Rash of 'Targeted' Burglaries

After a rash of "targeted burglaries" in three counties south of Albany, the New York State Police sent a public safety message, encouraging residents to be extra vigilant while investigators work the case.

According to the New York State Police,  Dutchess, Westchester, and Putnam counties have had a series of "targeted residential burglaries within the past week," urging residents to take additional security precautions.

Who Was Targeted?

According to the New York State Police, there were three residential burglaries targeting homes of Asian Americans where authorities say "substantial amounts of U.S. currency and jewelry were stolen in two of the incidents."

The New York State Police advises all residents who live in these areas, particularly those in the Asian American community, to be on high alert, asking residents to beef up security, safety, and community involvement.

Here's how, according to the New York State Police:

Enhance Home Security

  • Ensure all doors and windows are securely locked, including second-floor entry points.
  • Install or activate security systems and cameras
  • Keep exterior lights on during nighttime hours
  • Consider installing motion-sensor lighting

Practice Personal Safety

  • Be aware of suspicious vehicles or individuals in your neighborhood
  • Avoid discussing vacation plans or periods of absence on social media
  • Consider using timed interior lights when away from home
  • Secure valuables in a quality safe or safety deposit box

  • Report any suspicious activity immediately by calling 911
  • Document suspicious vehicles, including license plate numbers, when possible
  • Join or create neighborhood watch programs
  • Keep in close communication with neighbors
